Cory Aquino's funeral convoy reaches Intramuros, Manila

Separated by nearly three decades, Wednesday’s funeral of former President Corazon Aquino and that of her assassinated husband, former Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., will be sharply different.

Ninoy Aquino’s burial in 1983 was on many people’s minds Sunday as they grieved over the death of his widow, while noting the differences and similarities between the two events.

Family friends said the long-ago funeral was fiery, occurring in the midst of protests and hatred at Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship.

According to Philippine Daily Inquirer that Ninoy Aquino's uncle and former Tarlac Congressman, Hermie Aquino told them -- "During Ninoy’s wake and funeral, the people were angry and were crying for blood.” Now, it’s a show of love and compassion to Cory,” he said.

While the convoy reaches to Intramuros the Manila Police District said several roads would be closed in view of the vigil for Aquino at the cathedral. Some 1,000 policemen will be deployed around the vicinity of the cathedral.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay urged the public to join in honoring Aquino when the convoy passes through Ayala and Gil Puyat avenues at 11 a.m. or 12 noon.

Motorists are advised to avoid the east side lane of Ayala (bound for Gil Puyat), and the north side lane of Gil Puyat (bound for Taft Avenue), as these will be closed once the procession leaves La Salle Green Hills.

Last September 3, 2008, the former President Corazon C. Aquino has last full-length interview with GMA-7 correspondent Jessica Soho. She gave thanks to God for made her as a Filipino. Read the transcript here.
